I was on the bus today when I noticed this really old South Asian woman standing while the rest of us lots were enjoying our "nice" seats. Nobody even bothered to get up! I was in the back so I waited a few minutes to see if anyone would get up where she was standing but when they didn't...I gave her my seat. Though she had to walk all the way to the back! Now I am not saying this to show how nice I am...believe me I am far from that...I just have a really bad conscious and imagination that makes me think of all the possiblities in the world when I come across any situation or an event.
Anyways, my first thought, when I saw no one moving, was that maybe they are all bloody racist...I mean she is South Asian...but then when I looked closely...the bus was pretty pretty pretty multicultural. So you can really blame Anglo-phones...poor people always accused of racism when that clearly exists in every single culture. What I think, the matter was that we have very little respect for elderly...which is kind of counter productive since all the boomer generation folks are getting old and it's up to us to fend for them (as we all like to think unfortunately). We have all started to live in the "now" rather than to study from our past and think of our future. When we look at the elderly...not even for a second do we think oh what if we are old and this happens to us? (BTW I do that and that's why I do "nice" thing but I also think that this thought process is the worst of its kind...though it helps).
Actually, let's expand on the bracket comment...why I think selfish reasoning = doing good deeds is not a nice thing (even if it helps). As I have already said that this is a very selfish thing to do...we do not indulge in goodness because it is the right thing to do but because we think about what will happen to US in this situation. It helps...it really does...but it is really the worst of its kind. But since we are living in a very selfish world...why don't we just use this thought process to do some goodness in the world. What say?
I know I am not providing any concrete solutions (blame it on studying political science...there is no right answer!!!). Meh, all I care about is that we treat others as how we wish to be treated! If you see an elderly, pregnant or a disabled person...please get off your ass and give up your seat. Do a good dead!
